How to park your RV in Calgary

Questionable manoeuvring of recreational vehicles (RVs) has prompted the Calgary Parking Authority (CPA) to remind everyone that there is a right way to put things in park.

Spring and summer traditionally brings with it a number of complaints about how RVs are being parked in residential neighbourhoods, notes a CPA statement.

The authority can now enforce location and time-duration infractions involving RVs separately under a recently amended bylaw.

On average, 300 tags are issued annually to owners of improperly parked RVs. Fines for non-compliance range from $40 if paid within 10 days to $75 if paid after 30 days. There is also a fine provision for hazardous parking of RVs of as much as $160.

Among other things, CPA encourages RV owners to follow these tips:

• RVs can be parked directly in front of your home or on an alley or street immediately adjoining the home for up to 36 hours.
• Do not restrict access to private property at any time.
• An alley must be 6.1 metres wide at any point to allow for RV parking.
• Bear in mind special rules for alley parking, including that one cannot park across from, in front of or within 1.5 metres of a driveway or garage and at least three metres of the width of the alley must be kept clear.
