ICLR provides workshop on Environment Canada’s response to Sandy, future events

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) will host a workshop on Jan. 18 on “superstorm” Sandy, providing a perspective from an Environment Canada meteorologist. 

Geoff Coulson, a Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment Canada in Toronto, will present at the workshop, which will look at the agency’s forecasting of Sandy and its response to the storm. 

“While the Canadian impacts of Superstorm Sandy paled in comparison to those along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, the storm provided many opportunities for Environment Canada to put into practice and strengthen new techniques in inter-regional cooperation, early notification and risk communication,” ICLR says.

“Sandy reinforced improvements that have taken place over the last number of years in medium-range forecasting (three to 10 days into the future) with one model in particular, the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), demonstrating notable skill in forecasting Sandy’s rare westward turn inland seven days in advance.”

The event will also touch on potential future developments in how Environment Canada will alert the Canadian Public in advance of severe weather.
