Moderate earthquakes strike off Japan’s east coast, felt in Tokyo

A series of moderate earthquakes hit Tokyo and northeast Japan early on Mar. 14, 2012, with no damage or injuries reported.

The quakes happened roughly one year after the Magnitude-9.0 Tohoku earthquake resulted in insured damages estimated at around $5 billion.

A Magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan near the island of Hokkaido early in the morning of Mar. 14. The quake triggered tsunami warnings that have since been lifted.

Another, Magnitude-6.1 earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km off the eastern coastline, near the Chiba-ken Toho-oki region of Japan. This quake was felt in Tokyo.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that although the quakes may have resulted in “slight sea level changes in coastal regions, this earthquake has caused no damage to Japan.”
