No leaks, injuries or hazard in Saskatchewan train derailment

ESTEVAN, Sask. – Four tanker cars carrying crude oil derailed in Estevan, Sask., but officials say there were no spills or leaks.

Estevan police chief Paul Ladouceur says a few businesses were initially evacuated as a precaution on Thursday morning, but an assessment has since shown there isn’t any risk to the public.

There were no injuries.

Transport Canada and Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. have people on the scene to organize the cleanup.

Ladouceur says the train was travelling slowly when the derailment happened.

CPR spokesman Ed Greenberg says the cars were within the railways’ yard area.

“We have a lot of resources at our disposal and we can take the necessary time that’s required (to clean it up),” he says.

“There were no injuries, no environmental impacts identified and no public safety issues.”

An investigation by the rail company has already been launched to determine what caused the derailment.
