Ontario, Quebec windstorm declared a catastrophe event

Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. (CatIQ) has declared the windstorm that hit the southern regions of Ontario and Quebec over Monday night to be a catastrophe.

“Downed hydro lines delayed Toronto Go Train when the track was blocked by live wires,” CatIQ said. “The wind uprooted trees which caused extensive damage to houses and automobiles.”

Roof shingles and siding were also damaged by debris blown from strong winds. “In Montreal, the roof of a four-storey buiding was lifted, causing damage to other building and automobiles on the street below,” CatIQ reported.

In addition to damage to home and cars, private planes at the Burlington Air Park were also damaged when the wind blew the roof off of a row of airplane hangars.

Insurers with business in Ontario and Quebec will be receiving initial surveys from CatIQ shortly, the firm said.
