Quebec police pulling over more drivers for cell phone use

Quebec police are reportedly concerned about the use of cell phones while driving and a lack of seat belt use, according to a CTV.ca report.CTV cites figures from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) showing that 9,000 drivers were pulled over for using phones while driving in 2011. That’s up from 7,000 drivers who were pulled over for the same reason in 2010. Driving while using a phone has been illegal in Quebec since 2008.”Texting while driving can be really dangerous and we see that it’s a problem with younger people,” the CTV quotes Martine Asselin of the SQ as saying. Asselin added that the behaviour is not isolated to young people.Police say another troubling trend is the lack of seatbelt use in Quebec. SQ records show 25% of all highways deaths involved people who were not wearing seatbelts while in a car, CTV reports.
