Damage caused by wind and hail storm events across Canada and the United States cost State Farm more than $3 billion in 2013, the insurer said Monday.

That’s down from $3.9 billion in 2012, when Alberta alone saw 1,400 property damage claims from such severe weather events.

Last year, Ontario led the number of claims, at just over 1,400, while in the United States, Texas accounted for the most claims, at 42,000, State Farm said.

Overall, in Canada, more than 2,060 State Farm wind/hail claims were reported in 2013:

  • Ontario – 1,425 claims
  • Alberta – 525
  • New Brunswick – 100

The top five U.S. states with the most wind/hail claims were:

  • Texas – 42,000 claims
  • Illinois – 26,000
  • Georgia – 25,000
  • Oklahoma – 17,000
  • Minnesota – 15,000
