Almost 50% more auto claims during the winter: Aviva Canada

There are 47% more auto insurance claims during the winter months compared to the rest of the year, according to claims data from Aviva Canada. Weather-related incidents, slippery roadways and white-out conditions accounted for more than $37.8 million in auto collision claim payments for Aviva Canada between December 2009 and February 2010. The first snowfall of the year accounts for the highest instance of collisions, historically. On an annualized basis, an average of 4.6% of insured drivers make a collision in winter months compared to 3.1% the rest of the year. The increase in winter auto claim frequency is highest in Prince Edward Island at 66% versus the rest of the year. It is lowest in Newfoundland and Labrador at 41%.
