The catastrophe modeller says a preliminary count of more than 150 tornadoes touched down in two distinct systems between Feb. 28 and March 3. The majority occurred in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Alabama. Tornado activity for the year is well above average. Thus far in 2012, there have been 272 tornadoes. In contrast, the seven-year (2005-11) average of tornadoes over the same period (Jan. 1 to Mar. 4) is 123, EQECAT reported.
