ICBC has teamed up with police forces to remind drivers to be prepared and adjust their speed when driving on wet or icy roads this fall and winter.

In October, there are on average 64 crashes involving injuries or death in the Lower Mainland of B.C. due to people driving too fast for the conditions. That number nearly doubles in December as the conditions worsen, an ICBC release says.

ICBC offers the following tips to avoid crashes during the fall and winter seasons:

  • When driving on wet roads increase your following distance to four seconds;
  • Slow down. Remember the faster you drive, the longer it takes to stop on wet roads;
  • Make sure your windshield wipers are in good working order and you have sufficient windshield wiper fluid; and
  • Check that your tires are inflated at correct pressure and appropriately rated for the weather conditions.
