Installing monitoring system can reduce home insurance premium

Ontario homeowners could see a reduction in home insurance premiums as part of a partnership between Allstate Insurance Company of Canada and Rogers.

In markets where Smart Home Monitoring from Rogers is available, Allstate Canada customers who install the system will be offered a 25% discount on their premiums. They will also receive a free water leak sensor from Rogers and a hardware package that includes a touchpad, three window and door sensors and a motion detector.

The home monitoring, automation and security system uses constant broadband and wireless connections to ensure it is always up and running, Allstate Canada notes in a press release. Users can receive real-time updates via email or text, and have the ability to remotely control the system through a computer or smartphone.

“Burglaries can result in large claims, but it is property damage from fire and water where we’ve seen a rise in losses,” says Ryan Michel, vice president and chief risk officer for Allstate Canada. “For example, damage from sewer back-up accounts for 39% of our water-related claims.”
