Insured losses from Texas hail storm to reach $400 million

Insured losses from a May 28 hail storm in Texas are now estimated to reach $400 million, the Insurance Council of Texas said on Monday.

An estimated 35,000 vehicles and thousands of homes were damaged in the storm, which struck the city of Amarillo, which has a population of about 200,000.

The organization also said that auto body shops in the city are already being “slammed” with work orders.

“We are now at a two month wait to get vehicles repaired and we’ve just started taking orders,” Tanton Lowery, a detail specialist at Drury Body Shop said in a statement from the Insurance Council.

Brandon Roberts of West Texas Roofing also said damage to roofs from the storm are the worst he has ever seen and “doesn’t even compare to the 2004 hail storm, which was the costliest hail storm in Amarillo’s history.”
