Deer-vehicle collisions are not just a rural problem: the province’s public auto insurer now deems Manitoba’s capital city to be a high-risk area for such collisions.Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has posted two maps showing high-risk areas for vehicle-deer crashes in an effort to educate motorists.Within the broader Capital Region of Winnipeg there were 1,766 deer-vehicle collisions in 2009, MPI reported.Other high-risk areas include Westman, Eastman and Pembina Valley.”The captured data is deer-only collisions,” said Clif Eden, MPI’s manager of road safety. “Many people have the perception that deer-vehicle crashes only take place in rural Manitoba, but when you see the map of Winnipeg it’s alarming how many crashes take place within the capital city.”
