MPI pinpoints intersection collision hot spots

Manitobans seem to be in a rush to get to the weekend, with Fridays tending to see the most collisions – most of which are rear-end collisions – between 3 pm and 6 pm, according to Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI).MPI analyzed claims data from a five-year period (2005-09) and identified the Top 10 worst intersections for collisions in Winnipeg.In total, 7,153 collisions were reported at the 10 intersections, with Kenaston Blvd and McGillivray Blvd the worst (1,052 collisions were reported here).A total of three fatalities and 1,500 injuries occurred at these intersections. Friday was the worst day for intersection collisions (1,233 in total). The worst time period for intersection collisions (2,020) was between 3 pm and 6 pm was.”Many of these collisions were rear-end collisions,” said Ted Hlynsky, MPI’s vice president of claims control and safety operations. “The message to motorists is to anticipate when the light will change and leave enough space in front of you if you are required to stop suddenly.”
