An insurance product available from the Lloyd’s market has been deemed acceptable for use by Manitoba egg producers, after a ruling that says they can use private insurance.

A ruling by Manitoba Farm Products Marketing Council in January means that egg producers are not limited to purchasing their Salmonella insurance from the Manitoba Eggs Farmers (MEF)  body but can buy other private insurance products, according to a press release from mutual insurance company Lloyd’s insurer AEGIS London.

3D Poultry Disease Insurance, a product available from Canadian Lloyd’s broker Hub International, in conjunction with Toronto’s A10K and certain underwriters at Lloyd’s, has been deemed by the MEF as a suitable private insurance alternative to the Canadian Egg Industry Reciprocal Alliance (CEIRA) policy, AEGIS said.

“This decision marks a major change for the Canadian poultry sector,” Sophie Dunkerley, class underwriter for livestock from AEGIS London, who lead the development and underwriting of the product said in the release.

“It offers egg producers a real alternative and access to a competitive insurance market providing innovative and flexible products. 3D Poultry Disease Insurance provides cover for the key infectious diseases that are a threat to the Canadian poultry industry, backed up by excellent customer service and claims management.”
