SGI receives deluge of auto insurance claims for hail and wind damage during the summer months of 2011

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has received a total of 15,793 auto insurance claims for hail and wind damage to vehicles over the three-month period between June and August of 2011, about triple the five-year average for such claims.The government insurer received 9.141 auto insurance claims for hail and wind damage to vehicles over the same period in 2010.Among the 2011 claims, SGI received 1,495 claims for wind and hail damage done to recreational vehicles such as RVs.Environment Canada shows a number of major rain and hailstorms hit Regina and Saskatchewan over those three months, including major storms on June 17 (rainstorm in Saskatoon), June 29 (rainfall and wind in Regina), July 19-20 (power outages in Regina), July 26 (hail in Regina) and August 19 (hail in Saskatoon).
