CLASSROOM | ENHANCING | TRENDS How would a M9.0 Megathrust earthquake affect the Insurance Industry? Thousands of people around the globe suffer from the effects of earthquakes every year. Some cities have been devastated after major events, such as in the case of Chile, Japan, Christchurch and most recently Mexico City. Governments and institutions are continuously promoting awareness and preparedness. Understanding what an earthquake is and how it could affect the west coast would help us minimizing the impact. In early September 2017, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever to hit Mexico was followed by a Gulf Coast hurricane. Eric went to Mexico City to assist Charles Taylor Adjusting with the recent hurricane and earthquake losses. While he was in Mexico, on September 19, 2017, Mexico was struck by another earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.0. Payman Hosseini, P.Eng, Project Engineer Civil/Structural – Envista Forensics Payman provides structural damage assessment and failure analysis services to insurance claims, legal and corporations following catastrophic property incidents and disputes. In addition to his experience as a forensic structural engineer, he has seven years of design experience in the building sector, where he managed various projects ranging from small renovations to new multi-million dollar commercial buildings. He has a depth of expertise performing seismic assessments and utilized these skills on projects involving the retrofit of institutional, commercial, and residential buildings throughout Metro Vancouver.
