CLASSROOM | ENHANCING | TECHNICAL

Canada has recently experienced an exponential increase in the impact of flooding, both overland and urban. To cope with this deluge, the insurance industry has introduced new insurance coverages, as well as establishing more rigorous modeling, underwriting, and pricing practices to deal with our water exposures.

Based on today’s expectations for our industry to “get water right”, this seminar offers attendees a broad forum to learn from leading flood experts on the hazard, risk, and quantification of flooding. This seminar will cover the science of flood, the effects of climate change, the use of modelling, and risk management practices.

SEMINAR OBJECTIVES

  • Review the different types of floods and compare historical flood losses with other catastrophe events
  • Understand how expertise and technology is used to estimate frequency and severity, measure, and model flood
  • Discuss how climate change is affecting flood risk including the challenges of global circulation models and their use in the forecasting
  • Examine how probabilistic flood models are designed and used
  • Outline how insurers manage their flood portfolios
