Amphibious Construction for Flood Risk Reduction: Implications for the Insurance Industry

Flooding is the most frequent natural hazard in Canada, with each event causing property damage and social disruption. As climate change continues, the frequency and intensity of floods will only increase. Given this, how can individual homes be adapted to withstand floodwater?

In this talk, we’ll hear from Dr. Elizabeth English, one of the world’s leading researchers on amphibious construction. Her buoyant foundation retrofit adaptation solution allows for otherwise-ordinary structures to float safely on the surface of rising floodwater. By reducing flood risk to these existing homes and thus eliminating the likelihood of damage, can we increase the insurability of homes in floodplains that would otherwise be poor candidates for flood insurance?
