Canadian Underwriter’s What’s on Dec? podcast is undergoing a transformation.

This year, our video podcast will include a new CU Interview edition, replacing a print magazine feature in digital format. Every other month, we’ll talk to industry professionals about their journey into the insurance sector and some of their successes.

We’ll also continue to host our regular, current affairs edition of the podcast, which won Gold at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards for Best Podcast. These episodes showcase topical news affecting the Canadian P&C industry.

Audio Transcript:

David Gambrill:

Hello, everyone. My name is David Gambrill, and I am the editor-in-chief of Canadian Underwriter.

Jason Contant:

And I’m Jason Contant, CU’s associate editor and host of our regular podcast series, What’s on Dec?

David Gambrill:

So, Jason and I wanted to give you a flavour of what we’re cooking up this year for What’s on Dec? I’m excited to say we’re planning to expand the podcast offering, and we wanted to share with you what you can expect to see this year.

Jason Contant:

That’s right, David. So this year, we’re gonna be showcasing more of the industry’s news and insights, plus you’ll be seeing more of the industry’s personalities as well.

David Gambrill:

Yeah. So here’s how it’s all going down. Some time ago, we introduced our podcast, What’s on Dec? The title is a play on a term that insurance companies use. It describes the opening part of the policy that provides a complete coverage summary.

Well, similarly, we use the podcast to introduce a quick take from experts on current affairs in the P&C insurance industry.

Jason, maybe you can tell us a bit about that.

Jason Contant:

Sure. So, for What’s on Dec?, we talk to subject matter experts about topics affecting Canada’s P&C insurance industry. It might be events that are happening within the industry. It could be global events and how they affect the industry. Each of our podcasts are about fifteen to twenty minutes. Some of the past topics have included wildfires, commercial insurance trends in Canada, and Alberta auto reforms.

David Gambrill:

Yeah. We’ve got a bit of a feather in our cap on that one, don’t we?

Jason Contant:

Yes. We’ve been nominated actually for a Canadian Online Publishing Award for best podcast. Fingers crossed. We’ll see what happens.

David Gambrill:

Oh, yeah. That’s awesome.

So building on that success, we’re expanding the What’s on Dec? podcast in 2026. As you may know, we’ve reduced the frequency of our print editions this year down to two. We’ll be publishing the 2026 Canadian Underwriter Stats Guide. Also, we’ll be offering our 2026 Commercial Specialty Insurance Guide in a print format.

In addition to these print magazines, we’ll be concentrating on digital offerings. For example, in print, we had a special feature called CU Interview. We’ll be reproducing this in a digital format starting in 2026. And so every other month, we’ll be offering a new CU Interview edition of What’s on Dec?.

In CU interview, I’ll be talking to some of the industry’s movers and shakers about their journeys into the industry. We’ll talk about their contributions to the industry, and they’ll give us their thoughts on how to find success within this industry.

These discussions will be digital profiles. I hope viewers get some insights into some of the industry’s many intriguing personalities.

Jason Contant:

That’s cool. So just to be clear, I’m still gonna be hosting the bi-monthly current affairs podcast, What’s on Dec?. And so, David, for people who are interested in watching us, where should they go?

David Gambrill:

Well, that’s yet another digital offering in 2026. Everyone can find all of CU’s What’s on Dec? podcast, past, present, and future, on Canadian Underwriter’s new YouTube channel.

Check it out by clicking on the address noted below. Thanks for watching everyone. Looking forward to seeing you soon on What’s on Dec?.
