The Canadian Association of Managing General Agents (CAMGA) has appointed Brett Boadway as its new executive director.

She succeeds Steve Masnyk, who will step down at the end of September.

“I’m honoured to join CAMGA and look forward to working with the board and members as an influential voice in the industry,” Boadway says in a CAMGA press release.

She tells Canadian Underwriter Wednesday she will leave the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) on Friday, Sept. 26, and join CAMGA on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Boadway has been with the Ontario broker association for more than 12 years, beginning as the director of communications and broker relations and finishing as chief operating officer.

She brings more than 15 years of senior leadership experience to the MGA association, most recently serving as IBAO’s COO for six years. “With a background in communications and association management, she has demonstrated strength in key areas aligned with CAMGA’s priorities: partner relationships, benchmarking, education development, governance, member benefits, advocacy, team development, and technology advancement,” the association says.

Adds Masnyk: “I am delighted that CAMGA selected someone with a stellar reputation in leading one of the largest insurance trade groups in Canada, someone who will continue advancing the value CAMGA brings to its members and all those who trade with MGAs. Brett will only elevate the value CAMGA brings to the delegated authority sector in Canada.”

The appointment, unanimously supported by CAMGA’s board of directors, follows a thorough recruitment and due diligence process led by a search committee and external advisor. “The board views CAMGA as being at a pivotal point in its evolution and sees Boadway’s leadership as central to building on the association’s grassroots origins and advancing its advocacy work,” CAMGA says.

Steve Masnyk will step down as CAMGA's executive director at the end of September.

The association’s board of directors announced in June at its annual general meeting that Masnyk would be departing from his role as executive director of CAMGA. He was appointed to the position in October 2020 and led CAMGA by growing its membership to 80% of all MGAs in Canada, among other accomplishments.

CAMGA president Pete Tessier reports the MGA association was overwhelmed by the interest in the executive director role.

“Brett is exactly the leader CAMGA needs as it evolves from its founding roots into a modern, influential organization,” Tessier says. “Her reputation in the industry is impeccable, and her combination of skills, experience, and relationships will allow CAMGA to advance quickly and effectively during a time of significant change in the insurance sector.”

Boadway adds MGAs are a crucial part of the commercial and specialty insurance ecosystem. “Now is our time to work together to create an organization that stands as a trusted beacon within it.”

CAMGA represents the majority of MGAs in Canada, partnering with more than 40 insurance capacity providers. Founded in 2017, the MGA association advocates on behalf of its members before federal and provincial governments, insurance regulators, and across the retail brokerage and insurer sectors.
